When I first heard Woody Shaw's solos on Chick Corea's _Inner Space_ I knew he was a genius and an old soul. It inspired my commitment to playing jazz, and to study the interior experiences of jazz musicians during the process of improvisation. Thank you for constructing such as rich and coherent website in his honor.

Everything from this site is great, and I think many entries have already put into words what a great person and musician Woody was. Even from the first time I listened to WS I knew there was something different, sensitive, curious and wonderful about this musician.

I've been a long time fan of Woody Shaw. He was lost to us far too soon. His music, a guiding light will be with us forever.

Woody Shaw's body of work left behind distinct clues that point towards extreme clarity and metaphysical genius. Through careful and diligent research one begins uncover these clues in the most inconspicuous locales. It is only then that one can perhaps begin to understand what thought processes inhabit the minds of truly gifted artist. As art attempts to imitate life one can only hope that life is as good as the flickering flame inherent in the musical breadth of Woody Shaw.
W3 carries the torch!

I miss Woody a lot. I had the privilege of doing the last set with him when he played a one-nighter here in Vancouver in the early 80's. I'm an alto player. His band was Steve Turre, Mulgrew Miller, Stafford James and Tony Reedus. What a thrill for me...before the concert we were talking music and tai-chi and he noticed my horn....I had just come from an early gig. I played a few licks on the horn as he asked me to and said...."second set man"....he introduced me and we cooked.Playing with these guys brought out my best. Later we attended a late night party at my girlfriend's place. He was very complimentary about my playing and I owe him a lot. We never saw one another again but I have never forgotten that experience. Woody was the last of a noble line...Dizzy, Fats, Miles, Clifford, Lee, Freddie, Blue......Woody forever!

My favorite experience as a musician was to perform with Woody in the 80's. Woody was brilliant, energetic and always kind and encouraging to young musicians, the way a jazz hero should be. He was, and still is, my hero.

Congratulations to the Shaw family for the path of the life, soul, and blessing that God put into the spirit force that was called forth, Woody Shaw. I salute him and admire still the warrior that I was allowed to meet.

May Mr. Woody Shaw continue to linger and make a creative and beautiful impression in the minds and hearts of all. His talent is inspiring. His strength should indicate to all that you can be a King with most of the deck stacked against you.
Continue to play duets with Gabriel Mr. Shaw for the Almighty is smiling!

Listening to Woody Shaw’s music I hear a tradition singing from his bones. The intervallic precision, his explorative brilliance, the mind-boggling alacrity, and genuine feelings spurting out from the source, as it were, stand out in the realms of improvisatory music.
