:: 2005 NEWS ::
• SEAT NAMED IN HONOR OF WOODY SHAW Frederick P. Rose Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center -
Early this year, an anonymous donor purchased an honorary seat in the name of Woody Shaw. The seat is situated in the middle of
Frederick P. Rose Hall, located in the new and prestigious Jazz at Lincoln Center building in NYC.
Quite obviously, this will mean different things to different people. However,
given the "reality" surrounding Woody Shaw's life and legacy as one of the major contributors
to the world of Jazz, it serves as a long-awaited acknowledgement of
his tremendous dedication and sacrifice.
Those of us with personal ties to this man and his music understand the great significance of this event. And, to anyone who may
have contributed to this development, thank you!
• STEPPING STONES -
The year started out on a very good note when SONY - Columbia decided to re-issue one of Woody Shaw's all-time classic recordings, Stepping Stones: Live at The Village Vanguard. (SONY CK93646. 1978 & 2005)
The first-ever CD-release has brought much praise and enthusiasm given the symbolic and profound nature of this music's revival after many years of
questionable silence with regard to the circulation of Woody Shaw's music.
The re-issue is accompanied by three
new "bonus" tracks (Blues for Ball, Escape Velocity, and All Things Being Equal Are Not),
as well as three newly-designed and personal sets of liner notes, written by Woody Shaw III (son of Woody Shaw, and co-producer of the re-issue CD), Michael Cuscuna, and Steve Turre.

• WOODY SHAW LIVE, VOL. 4 -
Another gem was released this year when High Note Records produced the fourth volume
in its epic series of live Woody Shaw dates from San Francisco's historical "Keystone Korner".
The CD consists primarily of tunes from the "standard" Jazz repertoire (plus several originals as well), but, as usual, Woody Shaw and his
band present their originality with sheer fire 'n' grace.

• NEW LINE OF WOODY SHAW T-SHIRTS -
The first-ever official Woody Shaw t-shirt, released early 2005, has already gone
through a slight alteration in its design (front text went from "Beyond All Limits"
to "Stepping Stones") after having sold out the first batch in just a few months.
The image was captured by photographer Michael Wliderman during the late '70s at one
of Woody Shaw's engagements at the "Keystone Korner". The shirts are being distributed through
True Blue Music/Mosaic Records .
Fans can now carry Woody Shaw with them, or "on" them, so to speak -
giving them a revitalized sense of pride and enthusiasm.
T-shirts come in sizes: L, XL, and XXL. Get one: www.woodyshaw.com/merchandise.htm
• Woody Shaw's Rosewood and Little Red's Fantasy: Chosen among 50 FAVORITE LPs of the past 35 years. JAZZTIMES, Sept. '05 -
In addition to the seemingly-sudden rekindling of interest in Woody Shaw,
there has been a wide-spread increase in acknowledgement of his recorded work.
Two albums, Rosewood (Columbia. 1977 - Nominated for 2 Grammies) and Little Red's Fantasy (MUSE. 1977) have been selected
to represent 50 'favorite' Jazz recordings of the past 35 years -
part of JAZZTIMES' 35th Anniversary Issue, Sept. 2005. (Fact: The same year, Woody Shaw
also won the "Best Jazz Trumpeter of the Year" Award and was nominated as "Best Jazz Musician
of the Year" in the Downbeat Reader's Poll.)
However subjective these types of opinions may be, it is still good to know that Woody Shaw's
music has stood the test of time. In many ways, one could argue that his time has just begun, considering the
complexity, and intellectual 'potency' of his music. Perhaps people are now finally catching up to him...
